O Gringo at Biester Palace – In 2023, contemporary artist O Gringo, the artistic name of Bastien Tomasini, presented the exhibition “Blue, White & Charcoal” Production by Paris 75 Image at Luka Art Gallery, located inside the historic Biester Palace in Sintra, Portugal.

Held from 24 September to 22 October 2023, the exhibition brought together works exploring painting, charcoal and Portuguese tiles, creating a dialogue between the artist’s contemporary language and important elements of Portuguese culture.

Curated by Ana Carolina Azevedo, “Blue, White & Charcoal” represented an encounter between art, heritage, memory and identity within one of Sintra’s most remarkable architectural settings.

Blue, white and charcoal: material, memory and hope

In this collection, the cobalt blue of traditional Portuguese tiles meets the expressive power of charcoal. The delicacy of blue against a white background contrasts with the intensity of a material associated with the earth, human labour and Portugal’s history.

O Gringo uses this relationship to explore strength, resilience and hope. Recurring figures within his artistic universe, including the horse and the stork, acquire new meanings: movement, freedom, return and confidence in the future.

Fado and Portuguese culture also emerge as emotional references throughout the collection. Rather than simply reproducing familiar symbols, O Gringo reinterprets them through his own experience as a French artist with a profound connection to Portugal.

The artist O Gringo is proud to present his new collection entitled “Blue, White & Charcoal”. This collection combines overlapping raw materials, allowing him to rediscover “authentic” elements such as painting and charcoal.

The special series “Blue, White & Charcoal” stands out through the interaction of light with the intensity of the emblematic cobalt blue found in Portuguese tiles.

Each piece in this collection was specially created to express the full range of emotions and sensitivity experienced by the artist during his immersion in the world of fado.

In this series, new elements emerge, including the stork and the horse, which the artist associates with defining qualities such as strength and hope. These elements are brought to the forefront, adding a deeper meaning to each work.

In summary, the “Blue, White & Charcoal” collection represents a “more authentic” artistic expression, in which O Gringo connects with Portuguese cultural heritage by introducing materials charged with meaning, intensifying the emotion and sentiment present in his works.

O Gringo at Biester Palace – and the history of the family behind it

Biester Palace is one of Sintra’s remarkable examples of 19th-century Romantic architecture. Its construction was commissioned by Frederico Biester from the Portuguese architect José Luiz Monteiro in 1880, with the principal works completed approximately ten years later.

Conceived as a residence for the Biester family, the palace reflects the elegance and artistic sensitivity of a period in which architecture, decoration and landscape were envisioned as parts of a single artistic composition.

Its interiors feature work by the renowned Portuguese woodcarver Leandro Braga and the Italian artist and scenographer Luigi Manini. Carved wood, decorative paintings, stained glass and a rich combination of artistic influences give the building an atmosphere that is simultaneously historic, Romantic and mysterious.

Surrounding the palace, the park contains botanical species originating from different parts of the world and offers privileged views over the Sintra landscape and the Moorish Castle.

Presenting “Blue, White & Charcoal” at Biester Palace created a meaningful relationship between two different periods: the memory of a historic residence and the contemporary vision of O Gringo.
