O Gringo at the National Tile Museum Lisbon: Where Contemporary Tile Art Meets Portuguese Heritage
A Visionary Leap: Contemporary Tile Art Meets Innovation
INTRODUCTION
The exhibition presented by French contemporary artist O Gringo at the National Tile Museum Lisbon represents a significant dialogue between Portugal’s ceramic heritage and contemporary artistic practice.
During this exclusive interview, Dr. Alexandre Pais, then Director of the National Tile Museum, explains why Portuguese tile art has always evolved throughout history and how new technologies should be understood as part of that continuous evolution.
Rather than reproducing tradition, O Gringo proposes a contemporary interpretation where photography, digital image, mixed media and ceramic surfaces become a new visual language.
A VISION OF CONTEMPORARY TILE ART
For centuries Portuguese tiles have continuously evolved through different artistic movements.
According to Dr. Alexandre Pais, every historical period introduced new techniques, new aesthetics and new technologies.
The work developed by O Gringo follows that same tradition of innovation by combining:
• Photography
• Digital Printing
• Acrylic Painting
• Mixed Media
• Hand Finished Ceramic Surfaces
Instead of replacing tradition, technology becomes another artistic tool capable of extending the language of Portuguese ceramic art.
THE INTERVIEW
During the interview, Dr. Alexandre Pais explains that ceramic art has never been static.
He highlights that every generation initially questions innovation before eventually accepting it as part of the artistic heritage.
O Gringo’s work introduces an external perspective that interprets Portuguese culture through the eyes of a French contemporary artist, creating a dialogue between historical identity and modern visual culture.
NATIONAL TILE MUSEUM
Located in Lisbon, the National Tile Museum preserves one of Portugal’s most important artistic traditions.
The museum documents the evolution of Portuguese ceramic art from the fifteenth century to contemporary artistic practices.
Hosting O Gringo’s solo exhibition reinforced the institution’s openness to contemporary experimentation while respecting the historical importance of Portuguese tile heritage.
FROM THE MUSEUM TO LX FACTORY
Following museum projects, O Gringo continues presenting contemporary works throughout Lisbon, including regular exhibitions at LX Factory, where visitors can experience new collections, mixed media sculptures and contemporary tile artworks throughout the year.
The combination of institutional museum exhibitions and permanent presentations at O Gringo LX Factory reflects the continuity of the artist’s research and creative development.

THREE YEARS. A THANK YOU.
@ogringo.75 – Three years ago, the National Tile Museum @museunazulejo opened its doors to a dream I did not yet know how to name.
For years, I travelled to Lisbon to photograph the museum’s historic tiles. I came, photographed, studied, and returned to my studio in Paris with my mind filled with blue and white. Until the day I arrived and never left. Until the day Portugal became my home.
Today, three years after the opening of *Esperança Além do Horizonte* (*Hope Beyond the Horizon*), I feel the need to pause and say thank you.
To Dr. Alexandre Pais, who was Director of the National Tile Museum at the time and is now President of Museums and Monuments of Portugal, and to Dr. Dora Fernandes, curator of the exhibition, my sincere thanks for your trust, professionalism, and for believing in my work from the very beginning.
To the entire team at the National Tile Museum, thank you. Every person who works there with dedication and care became part of this story.
To Kátia Guerreiro @katia_guerreiro , thank you for your friendship, your extraordinary voice, and for making the closing of the exhibition an unforgettable moment.
To the fado singer Telmo Pires , thank you for your energy and for bringing life to the artworks we created together.
To my agent, **Paris 75 Image** @paris_75_image , thank you for believing in me and for making my projects possible.
And to everyone who visited the exhibition over nearly six months, my deepest thanks. Thank you for every visit, every conversation, every online message, and for all the kindness you continue to show me three years later.
Thank you, Lisbon.
Thank you, Portugal.
Thank you to everyone who made this journey possible.

O Gringo LX Factory Exhibition
O Gringo presents “Blue One Collection” at LX Factory
French artist O Gringo presents, at La Smart Galerie, within the emblematic LX Factory in Lisbon, his latest collection: Blue One Collection.
The exhibition brings together a body of work where blue , a colour that runs through the artist’s entire practice takes centre stage. This particular shade traces back to Chinese porcelain, brought to Europe by the Portuguese, which later inspired the Dutch ceramicists of the city of Delft, who transposed that distinctive blue into the tradition of tilework. It is from this long historical journey from China to Delft, and from Delft to Portugal that O Gringo draws to build his own visual language, weaving together memory, cultural heritage and an unmistakably contemporary aesthetic. O Gringo LX Factory Exhibition .
The exhibition can be visited at La Smart Galerie, LX Factory, Lisbon.
