O Gringo joins “Azulejos in Portugal. An Ongoing History”

Following its presentation at the Museu Municipal de Tavira – Palácio da Galeria, in southern Portugal, the exhibition is now expected to continue its journey with a new presentation in the north of the country. ( O Gringo azulejo Portugal )

This next chapter extends a project dedicated to making Portugal’s artistic heritage accessible across different regions, while creating new connections between historic collections, contemporary art and local cultural identities.

Among the contemporary artists represented in the exhibition is O Gringo, whose artistic research establishes new relationships between photography, ceramics, memory, identity and Portuguese azulejo.

His presence creates a dialogue between the historic heritage preserved by the National Tile Museum and the technical, visual and narrative possibilities of contemporary art.

A journey through five centuries of Portuguese azulejo

The exhibition presents a broad journey through the history of azulejo in Portugal, beginning with the earliest commissions brought to the country in the sixteenth century and continuing through the work of twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists.

The exhibition opens with pieces originating from important production centres such as Seville and Flanders. It then moves through seventeenth-, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century panels that reveal the many decorative, technical and iconographic transformations of Portuguese tilework.

Rather than simply presenting a chronological sequence, the exhibition shows how azulejo became one of the artistic expressions most deeply connected to Portuguese cultural identity.

Found in churches, convents, palaces, railway stations, public buildings and urban spaces, azulejo has crossed different historical periods without losing its ability to evolve.

This sense of continuity lies at the heart of the title Uma História em Aberto — An Ongoing History. The history of Portuguese azulejo is not complete. It continues to be written by artists, architects, designers, ceramicists, researchers and the institutions that preserve and reinterpret this heritage.

Artists represented in the exhibition

The artists publicly identified by the exhibition’s organisers include several major figures in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Portuguese art and architecture:

Jorge Barradas – Almada Negreiros – Querubim Lapa – Álvaro Siza Vieira – Bela Silva – Maria Keil – Júlio Resende – Júlio Pomar – Manuel Cargaleiro – Eduardo Nery – Estúdio Pedrita, formed by Rita João and Pedro Ferreira –O Gringo – Adriana Varejão

The exhibition also includes historic works dating from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Some of these pieces are associated with particular workshops, production centres or artistic periods rather than individually identified artists.

A special section is dedicated to tilework created for the Lisbon Metro, featuring works by Maria Keil, Júlio Resende, Júlio Pomar, Manuel Cargaleiro and Eduardo Nery.

By bringing these different generations together, the exhibition demonstrates that azulejo is more than a historic or decorative object. It remains a living artistic medium, capable of responding to changes in art, architecture, design and public space.

O Gringo and the contemporary reinvention of azulejo

Within the section devoted to contemporary approaches, O Gringo is presented alongside Estúdio Pedrita and Adriana Varejão.

His inclusion reflects the place that his artistic research has come to occupy within the contemporary dialogue surrounding Portuguese cultural heritage.

O Gringo works with a hybrid artistic language that combines different materials and processes, including ceramics, Fine Art paper, wood, photography and other forms of composition.

Through this approach, azulejo is no longer treated solely as a decorative surface. It becomes a narrative material: a fragment of memory and a meeting point between cultures, identities and historical periods.

This research gained particular visibility through Esperança Além do Horizonte — Hope Beyond the Horizon — his solo exhibition at the Museu Nacional do Azulejo in Lisbon.

That project brought together contemporary photography, Fado and Portuguese ceramic traditions, establishing a lasting relationship between the artist’s work and the cultural universe of azulejo.

In O Azulejo em Portugal. Uma História em Aberto, O Gringo’s work becomes part of a much broader collective narrative: five centuries of artistic transformation presented through works from one of Portugal’s most important museum collections.

An exhibition connecting southern and northern Portugal

Following the conclusion of its presentation at the Museu Municipal de Tavira, O Azulejo em Portugal. Uma História em Aberto is preparing to continue its journey in northern Portugal.

The circulation of the exhibition brings works from the National Tile Museum’s collection closer to new audiences and supports a wider process of cultural decentralisation.

Its presentation in the north will also create a new territorial dialogue. After Tavira and the azulejo heritage of the Algarve, the exhibition will encounter a region equally shaped by ceramics and tilework in its religious, civic, industrial and urban architecture.

The name of the next museum, together with the opening dates and visitor information, will be added to this article following the official announcement by the institutions responsible for the exhibition.

A history that continues to be written

The title of the exhibition expresses its central idea: the history of Portuguese azulejo remains open.

Historic pieces preserve techniques, images and knowledge passed down over centuries. Modern works show how azulejo became part of public architecture and transportation systems. Contemporary artists, meanwhile, continue to develop new ways of working with ceramics, images, materials and collective memory.

Within this journey, O Gringo does not appear as an isolated voice. His work participates in a wider artistic continuity connecting historic workshops, defining figures of Portuguese modernism and contemporary creators.

It is through this relationship between preservation and transformation that azulejo maintains its vitality. Its heritage remains recognisable, but never completely closed: every generation can observe it, question it and add a new layer to its ongoing history.
